Adoration Christian Centre is a Canadian and Haitian partnership. Through the centre, we strive to address the educational, spiritual and medical needs that challenge Haitian families and communities in the Port-au-Prince area.
The Adoration Canada Team oversees projects, plans for future expansion, develops programs, and helps raise funds through sponsorships and donations.
In Haiti, our directors, lead, co-ordinate, partner and train Haitians to carry out our mission. This is paramount. We are not there to do everything for them. We walk alongside Haitians, sharing the gospel through mentorship and training.
Prior to the earthquake, Adoration Christian Centre was providing a free Christian day school, a regular medical clinic, community programs and Bible study groups. At the school, children from the Delmas area, in Port-au-Prince, were offered a Christian education, two nutritious meals, and medical care if they needed it.
Adoration Christian Centre believes strongly that in order for a para-church ministry to succeed longterm, it must try to partner with the local church. Therefore, Adoration was also the home-base for the First Presbyterian Church of Port-au-Prince, established in 2008 through the combined efforts of the OPC and PCA missions in Haiti. Services were held twice each Sunday, catechism classes were offered and plans were being made for a seminary to begin.
The earthquake in January 2010 changed everything. Our school collapsed and our focus shifted to humanitarian aid, as well as emotional and spiritual support in a time of intense need.
Since that devastating day, our organization has been through considerable change. We revisited our mission. We reflected on the principles involved with helping those in need and we analyzed how we do our work.
We remain committed to sharing the gospel in Haiti through Christian education. We understand more than ever that to do this work, we need to think long-term. This means a continued partnership with the local Haitian church, providing spiritual leadership, training and discipleship. And we continue to love our Haitian neighbours by addressing their physical needs in tandem with the gospel.
Beyond our centre, Adoration sponsors approximately 70 students who attend local Christian secondary or post-secondary schools. Many of these students are graduates of our school, and also include some of the teachers at Adoration, who teach in the morning and attend classes in the afternoons.
The school employs eight teachers, two teacher assistants, two cooks, and four grounds-keepers who live on the grounds in a small residence, providing security. During the earthquake, two young staff members were killed at their university.
In July 2011 we merged with Word & Deed Ministries. The two organizations share a mission based on a Biblical worldview which aims to help and not hurt those we serve. Through this new arrangement, we can realize greater efficiencies and accountability to our supporters.
Our mission in haiti is challenging and inspiring. We thank you for your faithful support over the years and encourage you to continue. Together – Adoration, Word & Deed, and you – we continue to bring hope into the heart of Haiti.
