Haiti is broken. What do they need? Everything.
Our God is an awesome God, and we can rely on Him for everything we need to fulfill our mission in this life. Be it directly on the mission field, or at home in our various vocations, we can trust that He’s got “the whole world in His hands”.
Even Haiti.
There are times when that is easy to accept. There are also times when we cannot clearly see God’s plan. In those times, we need to grab hold of God’s hand and let Him lead us.
We feel called to serve in Haiti. In fact, we believe that God uses people like us to carry out his plans.
So how can we serve them lovingly, effectively and sustainably? Haiti needs to be made new. It needs to be reborn. From the rubble and ashes, Haiti needs to begin again. As Christians with a heart to serve Haitians, we cannot miss the obvious parallel of biblical rebirth. Everlasting transformation is only possible with Jesus Christ. In Him we are made new, and we know He is what Haiti ultimately needs.
So the question we ask ourselves is, how can we fulfill the command to love our neighbour AND make disciples of all nations?
We can care for them in their time of overwhelming physical need. We can train teachers and educate students through the glasses of the gospel. We can partner with, and support the local church, discipling future leaders who will one day stand on their own and take up the same tasks.
Haitians – not Canadians – transformed by Christ, will rebuild Haiti from the inside out. This is a long-term view that seeks true restoration and sustainability. It’s a commitment. It’s going to take effort, prayer and trust. But there is Hope in the heart of Haiti. And you can help.
